Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any difference between a podiatrist, podiatric physician, and a podiatric surgeon?
All three terms are used to describe doctors of podiatric medicine (DPMs). They are all uniquely qualified among medical professionals to treat foot and ankle issues based on their education, training, and experience. The amount and type of surgical procedures performed by podiatrists may vary based on each individual doctor’s training, experience, and personal choice within their clinic.
What type of training do DPMs receive?
DPMs receive medical education and training similar to medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy which includes four years of undergraduate education, four years of graduate education at one of the nine podiatric medical colleges, and two or three years of post-graduate residency training.
What are orthotics?
Orthotics refer to custom foot supports that replace other foot supports commonly purchased over the counter. These are designed to hug your feet more efficiently and aid in balancing any bio-mechanical inadequacies of the feet and legs.
Is it normal to have foot pain?
No - foot pain is not normal. Lingering foot pain could be a sign of a problem that needs professional attention. It’s important that you see a podiatrist before the problem gets worse or becomes more difficult to treat.
I think I may have an ingrown toenail. What should I do?
It's best to seek professional care as soon as possible so that one of our doctors can evaluate your toe. You should never try to remove an ingrown toenail yourself.
